France-based startup Mistral AI blows in with a $113M seed round at a $260M valuation to take on OpenAI

AI is well and truly off to the races: a startup that is only four weeks old has picked up a $113 million round of seed funding to compete against OpenAI in the building, training and application of large language models and generative AI.

Co-founded by former employees of Google's DeepMind and Meta, Mistral AI aims to make AI more useful by focusing on open source solutions and targeting enterprises.

The startup plans to release its first text-based generative AI models in 2024. Mistral AI intends to use publicly available data to build models and will open-source both the models and datasets. The startup's emphasis on enterprise customers and addressing the challenge of AI adoption sets it apart, with a belief that open source can overcome potential misuse.
